First off, the body has built in systems to find & eliminate toxins in the body. However, we are exposed to hundreds, if not thousands, of toxins on a monthly basis. From sources we can control, like the food we put into our mouth and the products we put on our bodies, to sources harder to avoid, such as air quality, contaminated water, and toxic building materials, potentially dangerous substances are everywhere. Now, the body is designed to eliminate toxins. However, the amount of exposure has exploded in the last 50 years and our bodies are struggling to keep up. Cleansing (if done appropriately) gently supports the liver and digestive system to safely eliminate stored toxins from the body. Lets be clear, not all cleanses are appropriate. Have you ever done a cleanse and ended up nauseous, shaking from chills, and suffering a killer headache? This is what happens when we force the body to dump toxins faster than the liver & digestive system can process them for elimination. We DO NOT want this to happen. This happens most often with cleanses that severely limit calorie in order to force the body to burn it's own fat stores. Toxins are stored in our fat and when we force the body to burn fat we release those toxins into our blood stream. If our liver & digestion is functioning well they can grab these toxins and move them out of the body. However, if our detoxification channels are compromised at all we end up with high levels of circulating toxins which not only makes us feel like crap but is dangerous to our health. A more effective approach is to use targeted nutrition & herbs to heal, strengthen, and support the liver & digestion so that it can do what it was designed to do.
Second, how do you know if you need to cleanse? The simplest way to answer this question is with a question. Do you feel fantastic on a regular basis? If the answer is no, you will benefit from a gentle, supportive, cleanse. Take the Comprehensive Toxicity Quiz to gain insight into how toxicity is manifesting in your body.
Lastly, which cleanse should you do? Mine of course! You saw that coming right? But in all seriousness, you should look for a cleanse that focuses not on reducing calories but instead on supporting the body with whole, fresh, and delicious meals. In addition, a program that incorporates supportive herbs & spices like dandelion root, ginger, and turmeric will support the liver & gallbladder.
